General Rules
Welcome to Long Sutton Target Shooting Club.
We want you to enjoy being a member of our club, have fun, improve your shooting and make friends. To do this we all have to follow certain rules that everyone can understand.
As a member of our club we ask you to follow a code of conduct to ensure the safety of our members and maintain the reputation of the club.
Rules of the Club
- All members must give their contact details in writing, so that we can keep you informed of everything that is going on within the club. This information will not be shared with anyone else.
- All members must sign the declaration of legal immunity on the back of their application form every year.
- Membership fees must be paid on 1 October each year and will be reduced pro-rata throughout the year.
- All members of the club will undergo a safety briefing covering gun safety and handling within the club premises. Once this has been carried out, you can then add your name to a detail. This ensures all members get a fair chance of shooting.
- All rifles and pistols that you intend to use at the club must be tested with the club chronograph to ensure they are shooting below the 12ftlb limit for rifles and 6ftlb for pistols. This also includes any change in pellet weight. Tests will be conducted at random throughout the year and any weapon found to be above the legal limit cannot be used at the club. A breach flag must be placed in your rifle/pistol when not in use. The club can provide these free of charge.
- The commands of the Range Conducting Officer must be obeyed at all times. The commands given will be covered in your initial briefing before you shoot.
- Club guns and pistols are available for your use. Please take care of them.
- No behaviour deemed as dangerous will be tolerated, and will lead to suspension of membership, subject to a disciplinary hearing with the committee.
- No discrimination in terms of race, creed, colour, age or ability will be tolerated and will lead to suspension of membership, subject to a disciplinary hearing with the committee. Please speak to an RCO or Committee member if you experience or witness a problem.
- Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian whilst on club premises. Proof of age may be required.
- Whilst on our premises your guns are covered by insurance, however outside the confines of the club they are not covered. We strongly recommend that you take insurance out insurance. The NSRA is the governing body of our sport, they offer a very comprehensive package of insurance, membership and training.
- Every member will be given a loyalty card that gives you a free evening on every 8th attendance.
- As a club, we affiliate ourselves to competitions governed by Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. There is an entry fee for each discipline, currently Yorkshire 20yds, 10m and Springer classes and West Yorkshire 20yds. We also run a club competition using the Yorkshire 20yd card results to create club divisions but if you don’t wish to enter the external competition, you can shoot cards to be put forward and at the end of the winter and summer league competitions, the top 3 placings are awarded a medal. There are certain rules regarding how rifles are allowed to be held for competition purposes, please speak to Gary for further information. Alternatively, the reference to Competition Specific rules can be found here (external link) https://www.nsra.co.uk/downloads/1-reference/82-rules?download=1608:clarification-of-benchrest-rules
We do want you to enjoy your sport. Thank you for reading the rules. If you want to discuss any part, please contact our club secretary Gary Bowles.
MEMBER & VISITOR RANGE USE
On arrival, members with their own guns will put them in the new gun racks, and then put their name on the detail list and lane of their choice, which will remain their lane for the evening. Members will then retire to the club room until it is their turn to shoot unless they are actively involved in the current detail.
Each detail will have a RCO for the evening and it will be the responsibility of the RCO to call their detail to shoot. If members are not ready for their detail, they may miss out until the next round. When the detail is finished shooting, the RCO will retrieve all of their detail’s targets and either hand them to the shooters or put them on the table in the club room for collection.
Club members waiting to shoot will wait in the club room until their detail is called. When called, they will collect a new target from the club room desk and write their name on it before placing it in the pellet catcher for their lane. The member will then collect their gun from the rack, go to their shooting position and await the RCO’s instructions. After shooting, the member will replace their gun in the rack and return to the club room.
CHILDREN IN THE CLUB
Whilst target shooting is an acknowledged safe sport, shooting guns is potentially dangerous when safety is not observed or children are too young or inexperienced to fully appreciate the dangers. To that end, it was agreed that children under 14 years, must be under the supervision of a parent or adult family member at all times. To make that easier, it was suggested that when parents and their children are shooting, at least one parent should be shooting on the same detail as their children. Running and shouting are also not acceptable at a shooting club so would parents please ensure that their children are aware of this.
VISITORS TO THE CLUB
Visitors are entitled to Four visits where they may take part in the shooting, on payment of the visitor fee, but after that they must become full members to continue shooting.
GENERAL CLUB USE
- Volunteers are always welcome to help set up the range just after 6 p.m. and to clear up at the end of the evening that may involve placing of tables back.
- Gun bags and boxes should be left in cars or along the tables along the side of the range.
- Vacuum is kept in the Post Cupboard. A visual inspection of the floor needs to be done so as to remove all traces of pellets and flash.
- If you make a drink in the kitchen, please ensure that you wash up and leave the kitchen clean and tidy.
- Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.
YEARLY MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS REMINDER
